MP2 - Common Task #1 - Assignment Overview

Central Task: An informational essay explaining the impact that a historical or cultural event had on marginalized people.

After reading an extended text that centers a significant US historical or social event, write a research paper exploring the impact of the event on a marginalized people or person living during that time period (e.g people of color, immigrants, LGBTQIA+). 

This task offers students the opportunity to engage in the research process and craft an informative paper supported by evidence.  Students’ research is rooted in the reading of an anchor text that centers the experiences of one group of people and is driven by the question, “Whose experience is left out?” 

Essential Questions to Guide the Unit

  • How do historical and social factors affect the creation of a work of literature?

  • How do authors present historical events to get at larger truths?

  • How accurate are an author’s portrayals of marginalized groups?

  • How can I use research skills to explore multiple perspectives?

CRAAP Test - Assessing the Accuracy and Reliability of a Source

'CRAAP’ is an acronym that helps you assess the accuracy and reliability of a source. The CRAAP Test was developed by the Meriam Library at California State University, Chico.

CRAAP stands for currency, reliability, authority, accuracy and purpose.

The CRAAP test can be used to  test the  sources used in a news report or you can use it to test the reliability of a website.
